Synopsis
Filmmaker Nadia Kamel’s family constitutes an extraordinary mix of cultures and religions. Her mother Naela (Mary) was born of a Jewish father and an Italian mother. The family converted to Christianity and later on, because of her marriage to a Muslim with the same mixed background, Mary also became Muslim. Mary tells the story of the family to her grandson and daughter. The spontaneous and unrestrained questions of the little boy open a window on the complexities of last century history. In Salata Baladi, many languages are spoken, but the communication between the various family members exudes an atmosphere of warmth and tolerance.
