Family screening: discover Dounia’s adventures, new friendships and the legends of Canada!

2 November 2026, 10:30–11:22 am, Salon des Arts Ménagers, Charleroi

A little girl with starlight in her hair, Canada’s snowy landscapes and legends that come to life… Step into the world of Dounia, the Great White North, directed by Marya Zarif and André Kadi, where imagination helps her embrace a new life and new friendships blossom across cultural differences. A poetic adventure filled with wonder and emotion for the whole family to share.

After fleeing the war in Syria, Dounia settles in Canada with her grandparents. The cold, the language, the customs: everything is unfamiliar. Through the people she meets, she begins to find her place, all while holding on to the hope of being reunited one day with her father.

Previously screened at the 2026 Millenium Festival in Brussels, the film brings Syrian, Canadian and First Nations cultures into conversation, while nature, the seasons and legends reflect Dounia’s emotions.

Her fears, hopes and friendships will resonate with children and adults alike. Why do people sometimes have to leave their country? How can we welcome someone from somewhere else? Plenty to talk about as a family after the screening.
