In Tijuana, a veteran journalist and the team of the independent weekly Zeta have continued writing and publishing in one of the world's most dangerous places for the media. When Felipe Calderon took office in December 2006, he launched a government offensive against the powerful drug cartels and organized crime. Since then, more than 40 journalists have been killed or disappeared in Mexico. While the war against drugs intensifies and the risks journalists take are increasing, will free press be silenced?
Reportero is Bernardo Ruiz's first documentary feature. He was the co-producer of The Sixth Section, premiered on PBS in 2003, which won the top short documentary prize at the Morelia International Film Festival in Mexico. In 2007, he founded his own production company, Quiet Pictures, in order to produce aesthetically innovative and socially relevant documentary films.
