In the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the region of Kivu holds the majority of the world's coltan reserves. Illegal exploitation of the ore encourages foreign armies to remain on the field, resulting in twenty years of conflicts during which thousands of women have been subjected to sexual abuse. Gynecologist Mukwege is fighting against the barbarism resulting from this context. All the women to whom he gave back their physical integrity and their dignity stand by his side.
The director will be there to talk after the movie.
The Belgian director Thierry Michel studied cinematography at the Institute of Media Arts in Brussels at the age of 16. His documentaries raise mainly political and social issues. Colette Braeckman, journalist for Le Soir and columnist for Le Monde Diplomatique, is an expert on African and particulary on Central African current issues. With this film, filmmaker and journalist work together and witness the action of Dr. Mukwege and the life of women that were victims of rape in Panzi, Democratic Republic of Congo.
