"A Belgrade apartment divided in two tells us the story of a family and of a country"
Director Talal Derki is able to share the intimacy of a family at war
We all have an electronic device such as a smartphone, a computer, a food processor ... But what do we know about their construction and the people who make them ?
Filmed for three years in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, Complicit offers a dark and edifying look at the global electronics manufacturing industry in China, where 90% of our devices are produced, of which 70% are mobile phones. From factories to hospital beds, the documentary traces the journeys of several Chinese workers who are seriously intoxicated by the chemicals used to clean and assemble electronic components. Include benzene, a known carcinogen, and N-hexane, a chemical known to cause damage to the nervous system.
One of these workers, Yi Yeting, decided to defend himself by learning about labor law and dragging his former employers to court. Suffering from a "professional disease" (leukemia), he created a cooperative that defends and helps other sick workers. Filmed sometimes secretly, Complicit follows Yi Yeting and other activists in their fight to improve working conditions in these Chinese factories.
The projection will be preceded by a contextualization with Stijn Sintubin, an active member of the CSC who has devoted himself since 1996 to the issue of labor law in Asia. Since 2007, the CSC has a working group on China. Subsequently, Stijn Sintubin had the opportunity to make several visits to China, mainly on industrial sites around Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Suzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and others. The CSC has collaborated with various Chinese NGOs active on various topics related to "Labor" (security and health, labor rights, etc.), and in recent years they have also partnered with the official Chinese union. In the context of this partnership they are trying to create links between workers and delegates from companies with a presence in Belgium and China.
